About

Lighting can often be an overlooked quantity, but it has the ability to really transform an environment - to influence basic human emotion to further a narrative or enhance spectacle. Simultaneously overwhelming and enticing, light is everywhere around us: being able to harness it and shape it can create some truly magical and life-changing moments. - TK

Tom Kitney is a Lighting Designer and Production Electrician based between London and Adelaide, Australia. He is the Technical Manager and resident Designer for the Noel Lothian Hall in the Adelaide Botanic Garden during the Festival Season for which he won 'Spirit Of The Fringe 2019'!

Tom graduated with a degree in Media Arts from Royal Holloway University Of London but quickly found his calling within live theatre. Cutting his teeth in the Off-West End Scene in London he was in-house Production Manager of the King’s Head Theatre and Technical Manager (co-founder) of The Hope Theatre. Highlight’s include the world premiere of ‘Shock Treatment’ the sequel to “The Rocky Horror Picture Show and original design for ‘Trainspotting: Live’ - A totally immersive live theatrical experience in an underground carpark within the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. For his recent design ‘Lifeboat’ he was nominated for The Off-West End Award for Best Lighting Design.

London’s Off-West End theatre industry gave Tom the ideal training ground to hone his skills, particularly branching out into Production Management and overall system design and maintenance. Plus some extremely creative problem solving to create complex shows in non-traditional theatrical spaces - often with huge power limitations! A recent collaboration with Canadian Company Talk Is Free Theatre on ‘The Curious Voyage’ saw Tom create custom dimming and control systems for an immersive top secret musical across a network of subterranean rooms with full wireless control across the site for the roving operator. Other notable challenges include shows in total darkness, escape rooms, free running across wet rooftops, and getting a large truck inside the Tower Of London!

Touring Arts Festivals worldwide has allowed Tom to forge some long-standing collaborations with musicians such as The Magnets (Great British A Capella Stars) and The Beatbox Collective (Reigning World Beatbox Champions). These collaborations range from venues such as the Shanghai Concert Hall, outdoor pop-up gigs, Spiegeltents, and The UK Beatbox Championships where just one showcase has got 643,000 views online. Working with groups such as these has given Tom a reputation for great musicality and he was thrilled to be asked to light Lea Michele (Glee) on her London Solo Debut at Shoreditch Town Hall. Tom is an experienced ETC Eos and Avolites operator and moving lights technician, plus has a strong background in video and AV within live environments - particularly managing to balance visual elements across both live and broadcast audiences.
